At the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), we unite ocean-facing researchers from across the University of Southampton, providing them with opportunities to network, collaborate, and innovate.
Our collaborative and diverse network of experts, along with the exceptional infrastructure and facilities, enables high-quality research and solutions to real-world challenges.
We are dedicated to producing and translating world-leading ocean research into practical, scalable solutions for industry, policymakers, and communities.
We do this through:

The SMMI serves as a gateway to the expertise of the University of Southampton for industry partners, local and national government, civic bodies, and international collaborators.
Facilitating knowledge exchange
Through workshops, internships, studentships, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs), placements or exchanges, we educate the next generation of leaders and promote knowledge exchange within and beyond academia.
Advocating for policy change
We engage with policymakers to advocate for the adoption of research findings into policy and legislation.
Promoting visibility
