Silica Fibre Fabrication

Rare-earth doped silica fibre fabrication using vapor phase deposition technique

We conduct fundamental and applied research in the field of optical fibre technology covering materials science, new fibre designs and fabrication techniques required for high-power lasers, generation of new wavelengths, sensing, and telecommunications.

Part of Photonics and optoelectronics

The Silica Fibre Fabrication group, led by Professor Jayanta Sahu, focuses on the research of novel silica-based fibres and the methods used to fabricate them. We strive to create the most advanced fibres for each photonics application, while simultaneously developing the next-generation of fibre fabrication techniques.

Zepler Cleanrooms

The Zepler Cleanrooms Complex is a state-of-science multidisciplinary Centre which includes a variety of facilities and laboratories for materials and device research in electronics, photonics and nanotechnology, with both planar wafer and optical fibre capabilities supporting both Research and Enterprise.

Fibre Bragg Gratings

We design and fabricate passive and active periodic fibre devices, including fibre Bragg gratings, for a variety of applications in photonics.

High Power Fibre Lasers

The High Power Fibre Laser group, led by Professor Johan Nilsson, works on advanced fibre lasers for beam combination and sensing for lidar and net-zero aviation (pollution monitoring).

Physical Optics

The Physical Optics Group is led by Professor Peter Kazansky. Research activities in the group are focused on adventurous and potentially high impact research in optics, quantum and physical electronics.

Advanced Solid-State Sources

The Advanced Solid-State Sources group develops novel approaches for scaling output power from lasers for use in a variety of applications including industrial manufacturing, medicine and defence.
