How to apply for accommodation
Who you’ll live with
You'll be living with other postgraduates, nearly all of whom will be international students.
Within the flats in each residence, we aim to create a mix of students in terms of nationality, whilst trying to ensure that no one feels isolated.
Where you’ll live
Our postgraduate accommodation houses students from a mixture of disciplines and in different stages of postgraduate study, but you will be surrounded by fellow ‘more mature’ students in the same position as you.
When you make your accommodation application, you'll be able to choose from Halls that offer postgraduate accommodation. City Gateway, Mayflower, Wessex Lane and Glen Eyre are popular options among postgraduate students.
We may sometimes offer rooms at privately-owned halls of residence, with which the University of Southampton has a partnership agreement. In this case a contract would be formed between yourself and the private company that manages the accommodation.
The information provided on this page refers to University of Southampton-owned halls only. If you are offered a room at a privately-owned hall, this will be clear to you when the offer is made, and you should check the accommodation contract carefully as the terms and conditions will be different to University-owned accommodation.

Room types
A range of different room types are available across all of our sites – deciding which is right for you depends on your lifestyle and budget. All of our rooms are for one person only - we have no twin or shared bedrooms.
Our single, en-suite rooms (private bathroom facilities) mean you will share a flat – kitchen and social area – with 6-8 other people.
Our studio apartments (single large room with kitchenette and private bathroom facilities) offer a more private living option, while still offering opportunities to meet with like-minded people in communal areas of halls. We also offer rooms with shared bathrooms and shared kitchens.
Most of our accommodation is in mixed-sex flats, but you can choose to live in a single-gender flat if you wish. In this case you would share a kitchen with residents of the same sex as yourself.
Community
The Student Union’s Postgraduate Research Reps represent the interests of the postgraduate community and run an extensive series of postgraduate activities and events throughout the year.
These include – but are not limited to – a Postgraduate Christmas Event, Postgraduate Coffee & Cake, Postgraduate Quiz Night, Postgraduate Summer BBQ’s.
Connecting you
All residents of University-owned halls in Southampton are given a Unilink bus pass which connects Southampton halls with the city and our main Southampton teaching campuses with direct links to railway stations, main Southampton hospital, ferry travel and Southampton airport.
