Our mission and goals

Uncover how cGMI will power rapid change in the maritime sector and pave the way towards zero carbon and sustainable innovation.

The global maritime industry stands at a critical juncture. With ships and port infrastructure lasting for decades, the actions we take now will have long-lasting effects on the 3% of global emissions generated by shipping. We must act now to scale and speed up the development of technology that reduces carbon emissions across the sector.

cGMI's purpose is clear: to transform the UK into the global leader in zero-carbon maritime technology.

Through advanced research, collaboration, and industry partnerships, we’ll prove and deploy the next generation of green technologies. This effort will not only drive decarbonisation but also ensure the long-term economic prosperity of the UK’s maritime sector.

Accelerating technological change

The need to reduce emissions is undeniable. To meet the International Maritime Organisation's target of net-zero emissions by 2050, we must accelerate technological innovation.

cGMI will play a vital role in this transformation by fostering the development, testing, and proving of advanced solutions. These will range from optimised ship designs to carbon capture technologies.

Through a unified approach, cGMI will address industry challenges by incorporating green technologies in various vessel types and operations.

Boosting economic growth, global leadership, and industry partnerships

Our work will go beyond sustainability. Economic growth, job creation, and global leadership are significant benefits of the green maritime revolution.

The maritime sector contributes nearly 25% of the Solent region’s gross value added (GVA), and through our efforts, we aim to boost this figure by attracting investment, fostering new businesses, and supporting trade.

By taking a leading role in the global transition, cGMI will ensure the UK's long-term economic and environmental future.

We also know how important it is to work closely with industry. Through partnerships with regulators, maritime operators, and technology developers, we’ll make sure our solutions are environmentally sound and economically viable.

Building a cleaner maritime industry

We'll focus not only on advancing technology but also on protecting the environment.

Maritime operations play a key role in global trade, but they also produce significant carbon emissions and pollution. Our goal is to develop innovative technologies and sustainable systems to make maritime operations cleaner and greener.

We’ll ensure every part of the supply chain, from ship design to port infrastructure, supports environmental sustainability. By integrating green energy solutions, emissions-reducing technologies, and eco-friendly practices, we'll help the UK reduce its environmental footprint and improve the oceans' long-term health.

Our approach balances economic growth with ecological preservation.
