About
Dr. Giacomo Squicciarini is an Associate Professor within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. Since joining the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) in 2012, Dr. Squicciarini has made contributions to railway noise and vibration, vibroacoustics and piano acoustics. His work is distinguished by a commitment to both research and teaching excellence.
From 2020 Giacomo is the programme lead for the MSc in Acoustical and Vibration Engineering.

- Theoretical modelling of rolling noise: predictions of noise radiated by a train wheel rolling on a rail.
- Curve squeal: measurements and models for understanding and mitigating curve squeal noise.
- Piano acoustics: experiments and numerical modelling of sound generation in pianos.
- Railway noise measurements. Various aspects of railway noise measurements including microphone arrays for source identification.
- Noise radiation and acoustic response of plates.

Teaching
Giacomo teaches Dynamics, Acoustical Engineering Design, and Noise Control to undergraduate and MSc students. He is the module lead for Acoustical Engineering Design and Noise Control Engineering.
"I enjoy all the aspects of teaching and I have been making extensive use of computer animations, quizzes, and in-class experiments in my lectures. I like to combine these new ways of delivering teaching material with classical methods such as writing on a whiteboard."
Biography
Giacomo graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 2008 at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He then pursued a PhD degree studying the vibroacoustic of the grand piano soundboards.
He joined the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton in 2012 as a research fellow working for the EU project Acoutrain. He became a New Frontiers Fellow in the faculty of Engineering in 2015, a lecturer in 2019, and an Associate Professor in 2023
Giacomo's main area of research is Railway Noise and Vibration. In this field, he has contributed to over 30 journal papers. Giacomo is also working on vibroacoustic and piano acoustics.
