Silicon photonics (CORNERSTONE)

CORNERSTONE is an open-source, license-free silicon photonics rapid prototyping foundry operating from the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre within the Zepler Cleanrooms complex.  

We offer a range of diverse applications ranging from telecoms to sensing, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), AI, quantum, and more. Platforms are accessible via multi-project-wafer runs or bespoke batches:

  • silicon-on-insulator: 220 nanometer (nm), 340nm and 500nm
  • silicon nitride
  • suspended-silicon
  • germanium-on-silicon

Each platform features a standard component library, reducing entry barriers for non-photonics experts. Our prototyping leverages industry compatible deep-ultraviolet projection lithography, enabling seamless scaling-up, with the option of high-resolution e-beam lithography as required.

CORNERSTONE is dedicated to supporting cutting-edge research. We will gladly experiment and try new things for the benefit of our users. This dual approach of using industry compatible processes and flexibility in our fabrication, helps us support both low volume prototyping and early-stage R&D proof of concept projects. Additionally, we offer training courses and design consultancy to enhance your expertise.
