This PhD project will contribute to provide sensors to operate at real world settings to the acceleration noise level of 1e-10 m/s^2/√Hz based on demonstrated levitated mechanics experiment in our Southampton labs. -

Experimental generation of macroscopic quantum states
This PhD project will probe into macroscopic limits of quantum mechanics. You will take part in generating macroscopic quantum states by putting nanoparticles in spatial superpositions analogous to matterwave interferometry. Modifications of quantum theory such as decoherence and collapse models predict that we will fail in this attempt fundamentally at computable levels of macroscopicity which is a superb playing field for testing conventional and less conventional fundamental physics ideas. -

In this PhD project you will join our ongoing effort for setting up two-mass (source mass & probe mass) experiments in low-noise settings for probing the inverse square law scaling for accelerations below 1e-11 m/s^2. -

Smart, safe, scalable, & sustainable synthesis of MXenes - nanomaterials for the transition to net-zero
MXenes are a promising new family of nanomaterials. They have unique properties and show great promise in many applications fundamental to the net-zero transition (e.g. gas storage, energy storage). This project aims to develop environmentally-friendly, safe, and scalable methods to enable large-scale manufacture of MXenes to meet future industrial needs. -

Extreme Physics Around Black Holes: Exploring Accretion Disk Dynamics at the Edge of the Event Horizon
Black holes in our Galaxy, with masses between 5 and 15 times that of our Sun, form when massive stars explode in supernovae. These dense objects are so compact that not even light can escape their immense gravitational pull. Fortunately, some black holes reside in binary systems with companion stars. When the black hole is close enough to its stellar companion, it draws gas from the star, gradually reshaping it into a pear-like form. This pulled gas doesn’t plunge directly into the black hole but spirals inwards, forming an accretion disk—similar to water swirling down a drain. -

Chaotic systems are abundant in both natural and man-made systems. This project is about developing new methods for predicting chaotic system dynamics, inspired by novel machine learning technologies, and is developed alongside a University consortium project attempting to model financial risk. -

This collaborative project with automotive audio leader ASK Industries offers a unique opportunity to develop innovative spatial audio measurement and reproduction techniques, as well as design and implement a multi-channel loudspeaker system capable of reproducing the acoustics of a car interior.
EngineeringCharacterisation and Prediction of Ducted Propeller Noise with Short Intake
This PhD project focuses on characterizing and predicting noise in short intake ducted propeller systems for eVTOL aircraft, critical for Urban Air Mobility noise reduction. Using advanced techniques like Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and acoustic measurements, this research will inform models and explore acoustic liners to reduce noise emissions.

This project aims to rationally design sustainable and cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts for fine chemical manufacturing by combining experimental and computational methods. Objectives include analysing catalyst surface chemistry, building predictive microkinetic models, and synthesizing new catalyst architectures. The project addresses environmental and economic challenges associated with industrially relevant heterogeneous catalysis.Electronics and computer science | Engineering | Physics and astronomyNonlinear ultrasonic imaging for closed cracks
Closed cracks are challenging material defects where the two split faces touch, making them extremely difficult to detect. This project aspires to create new methods for ultrasonic imaging of complex cracks through experiments, modelling and advanced imaging development. Its outcome will help detect cracks early and monitor their evolution.
