About
Dr Valeria Parlatini is an Associate Professor and Honorary Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Southampton/Solent NHS Trust. Her research focuses on identifying predictors of mental health outcomes to personalise and improve clinical care, especially for children and adults with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She is actively involved in teaching medical and psychology students and supervises undergraduate, MSc and PhD students. As a consultant, she specialises in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions and offers formulations for complex cases.

Current research
Dr Valeria Parlatini has been leading research focusing on predictors of treatment response in ADHD, utilising a variety of neuroimaging techniques alongside clinico-neuropsychological measures. She has established international collaborations to integrate biological and clinical predictors through machine learning. She is committed to enhance the translatability of this work by increasingly adopting tools more applicable in clinics. In addition, Dr Valeria Parlatini actively contributes to evidence-synthesis aiming at guiding research and clinical practice. For instance, she led the largest systematic review/meta-analysis of diffusion imaging studies in ADHD, working with academic colleagues in the UK, Europe, and Asia. She recently contributed to expert reviews on pharmacological treatments and transition for people with ADHD.

Teaching
Dr Valeria Parlatini is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is dedicated to fostering the development of future clinicians and researchers. She enriches education by incorporating her clinical research experience into teaching. She is the director of a national educational course for clinicians, and she has extensive experience in teaching and supervising undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students.
Biography
Dr Valeria Parlatini was awarded a scholarship to attend medical school at the prestigious San Raffaele University (Italy), where she graduated with honours (MD) and became consultant in medical psychotherapy (dual training psychiatry/psychotherapy). She then moved to the UK, where she completed an MSc in Neuroscience and a PhD in Biological Psychiatry (King’s College London). During her PhD, she investigated predictors of treatment response in adult ADHD, focusing primarily on neuroimaging techniques. As an appreciation of her research, she received three international awards, including the Young Scientists Award at the World Congress on ADHD. She also completed additional clinical training at the Maudsley Hospital, including an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) and Academic Clinical Lectureship (ACL). During her clinical lectureship at King’s College London and Maudsley Hospital, she was awarded the Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant to conduct epidemiology research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of children with pre-existing mental health conditions. She recently joined the University of Southampton as an Associate Professor and honorary consultant to continue advancing her research on ADHD.
