Current research
The Caribbean has been dealing with the effects of sargassum influxes for several years which has led to a variety of negative impacts. However, little research has been done on the associated ‘sargassum-brown-tide’. The key focus of this study is examining the direct and indirect effects of sargassum-brown tide on coral reefs as well as the physicochemical effects of climate change, that must be better understood for effective long-term management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). It is hoped that this will guide future policy and actions regarding the management of coral reefs and sargassum. This project brings together new knowledge, technologies, and methods to evaluate selected coral reef systems around Ambergris Caye, Belize.
