Dr Mazed Islam is a Lecturer of Fashion and Textiles at the University of Southampton, with research interest on sustainability and circular economy in fashion and textiles, sustainable supply chain management, sustainable fashion production and consumption, fashion digitalisation, industrial sustainability, product development, and life cycle analysis. He obtained PhD from the University of Manchester UK, focusing on sustainable practices and circularity in fashion and textiles. Dr Mazed is a Fellow of Advance Higher Education UK (FHEA), Fellow Royal Society of Art (FRSA), Fellow of the Textile Institute (CText FTI) and a Commonwealth Scholar, UK. He is also a mentor and panel reviewer for the Advance HE professional accreditation scheme, UK.
Mazed brings over 16 years of demonstrated experience of working across global fashion and textiles industry-academia. He worked with renowned global fashion brands/retailers from EU, UK, and USA and suppliers across Asia and China. Mazed was awarded research grants and worked as PI (Principal Investigator) and Co-I of several research projects. He was invited to research talks in numerious seminars and symposiums, and presented research works at many international conferences. Dr Mazed is the lead Editor of the special issue "Sustainable Practice and Governance in the Fashion and Textile Industry" of Journal Sustainability", Member of Sustainability Forum at WSA, member of digital fashion network (DFN) UK, Member of International Scientific Committee of Functional Textiles and Clothing Conference-2025, IIT, India, and a regular reviewer of reputed peer-reviewed Journals/Books in his field including, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Sustainability, Journal of Fashion and Textiles, Journal of Textile Institute, Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education which recognises his contribution and engagement to the wider research and innovation community. Mazed’s research and publications (over 50) in international leading journals/conferences (SCOPUS, SSCI Indexed), including Springer, Elsevier, Emerald, Taylor and Francis, MDPI and Sage, recognise his valuable contribution to scale-up and establish sustainable practices in fashion design, materials, methods, process, technology, products, consumption, and supply chain management.
Dr Mazed has significant experience with Undergraduate, MA, and PhD students supervision, developing the next generation fashion leaders, researchers, managers and technicians. Alongside research, his present role encompasses teaching-learning support to postgraduate students in fashion and textiles, and supervising M.Sc and PhD research projects. Mazed is passionate to provide education, research and consultancy support to the fashion and textiles industry with a focus on sustainable practices and a digitally enabled circular economy that enables transition to a sustainable fashion/textile system without compromising the environmental, social, and economic issues through a multidisciplinary approach.
