My current project aims to make balance sensing widely accessible through the development and optimisation of wireless, cost-effective pressure-sensitive mats. The end goal of this is to have mats for use in home-based systems that focus on strength and balance training, with potential users ranging from the elderly to athletes. I have also investigated other low-cost techniques for measuring balance, such as the use of joint tracking for measuring postural sway and stability. In addition to balance monitoring, my previous investigations have also looked at the mechanisms of how we balance, including how various stimuli such as vibration can influence our balance system. Overall, my research aims to improve the way we assess human balance at minimal cost, opening the possibility for further innovative solutions in both healthcare and sports performance.
