Professor Joanne Roberts is Emeritus Professor in Arts and Cultural Management at Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton, UK.
Joanne gained her PhD at the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, Newcastle University, UK, and she has held academic posts at the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, and Northumbria, UK. In previous posts Joanne has managed subject groups of more than 30 academics. From July 2016 until July 2018 she was Director of Research at Winchester School of Art.

Current research
Joanne’s current research interests are focused on knowledge, innovation and creativity, particularly in relation to the field of luxury. She is exploring how knowledge of luxury is acquired and what it means to know what luxury is. In addition, she is concerned with the role of knowledge and ignorance in the field of luxury, including how they shape the production, promotion and consumption of luxury goods and services. Joanne is also exploring the connections between luxury, art, space, prosperity and inequality.
Joanne has written extensively in the fields of business and management. She has published widely in leading international academic journals including Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Business Ethics, Management Learning, and Research Policy. Joanne is author of Multinational Business Services Firms (Ashgate, 1998) and A Very Short, Fairly Interesting and Reasonably Cheap Book About Knowledge Management (Sage Publications, 2015). In addition, she is co-editor of Knowledge and Innovation in the New Service Economy, with A. Andersen, J. Howells, R. Hull and I. Miles (Edward Elgar, 2000, Living with Cyberspace, with J. Armitage (Continuum, 2002), Community, Economic Creativity and Organization, with A. Amin (Oxford University Press, 2008), and Critical Luxury Studies: Art, Design, Media, with J. Armitage (Edinburgh University Press, 2016). Joanne is also co-editor, with John Armitage, of The Spirit of Luxury, a special issue of the journal Cultural Politics (Duke University Press, 2016), and The Third Realm of Luxury: Connecting Real Places and Imaginary Spaces, (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2020).
Most recently, Joanne has co-edited, with Pierre-Yves Donzé and Véronique Pouillard, The Oxford Handbook of Luxury Business, (Oxford University Press, 2022).
