About this course
This course starts in September 2024.
Master 2 modern languages and understand how languages are created, learned and shaped. Choose to study French, German or Spanish with linguistics. You'll start at undergraduate level and get a master’s in 4 years.
Spend a year of this 4 year degree abroad on a university placement in 1 or 2 countries. Develop your language skills and critical thinking while learning about other societies and cultures.
You can choose a language you have not studied. You'll get extra hours of teaching and funding for a language course abroad at the end of year 1 to make fast progress.
Whichever languages you choose, you'll:
- become a skilled linguist and familiar with how the languages are spoken
- gain the skills to interpret cultures and their beliefs and behaviours
- study a society or cultures where your chosen language is spoken
- write a dissertation on a topic that you are interested in

Course structure
The 4 year degree combines undergraduate and postgraduate study in one programme. You study both linguistics and your 2 chosen languages throughout your degree.
Year 1 overview
You study your chosen languages and the history, politics and culture of the societies where your languages are spoken.
We work out which language level you are at to give you the best possible start to develop your skills.
If you have not studied 1 of the languages before, we offer extra teaching and fund a language course abroad at the end of year 1.
You also get an introduction to major themes in linguistics.
Year 2 overview
You choose at least 2 linguistics modules and at least 1 language module for each of your chosen languages.
You choose modules that equip you with different ways to study cultures and languages.
These include:
- socio-historical studies
- cultural studies
- ethnography
- linguistics
- politics
Year 3 overview
Spend a period of time studying abroad. You can either spend all the time in 1 country or split between 2 countries. This gives you the opportunity to practise both your languages and get to know new cultures and people.
You'll carry out independent study as part of your Southampton modules, as well as modules from your host universities.
We’ll support you with regular video calls and emails.
Year 4 overview
After returning to the UK, you’ll take master's-level modules and can focus on areas of interest you've developed during your studies.
You choose at least 2 linguistics modules and at least 1 language module for each of your chosen languages.
You carry out research for a dissertation using the intellectual skills you've gained throughout your degree.

Fees, costs and funding
Tuition fees
Fees for a year's study:
- UK students pay £9,250.
- EU and international students pay £23,400.
The Government has recently announced changes to UK tuition fees from September 2025 onwards. We will update our website to reflect this shortly.

What happens after you apply?
We will assess your application on the strength of your:
- predicted grades
- academic achievements
- personal statement
- academic reference
We'll aim to process your application within 2 to 6 weeks, but this will depend on when it is submitted. Applications submitted in January, particularly near to the UCAS equal consideration deadline, might take substantially longer to be processed due to the high volume received at that time.

If we make you an offer which you accept, we’ll email you to confirm the language combination you want to study. We’ll be in touch no later than 2 months before the start of your course.
