Module overview
Teams of students will work together to address a practical, real-world sustainability problem set by industry and government partners. Each team will have an academic and an industry advisor, and work together to produce a demonstration of their solution to the challenge. Demonstrations must include elements combining sustainability and electronics and/or artificial intelligence algorithms in an integrated solution.

Syllabus
At the start of this module, the students will have a 2-day intensive Software Carpentry workshop, organised through the Software Sustainability Institute (SSI).

Assessment
Assessment strategy
Assessment will be through group work.
Summative assessment:
Assessment will consist of four elements:
1. A flyer/brochure for distribution at the demo festival – 20%.
2. An impact assessment report of the group’s solution to the sustainability challenge – 20%
3. A 3min video illustrating the key contributions of their team project – 30%
4. A group presentation showing a practical demonstration of their solution to the challenge – 30%
The assessment is specifically designed to be focussed on development and demonstration rather than the production of an extensive technical report. The key challenge for the students is for them to communicate the technical contributions of the work to address sustainability through the demonstration itself, along with the video and flyer.
Feedback will be through those attending the demo festival as well as formal feedback from examiners.
