Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• at least one culture and society, other than your own, and the similarities and dissimilarities between that/those culture(s) and society(ies) in comparison with your own
• one or more aspects of the culture(s), linguistic contexts, history, politics, geography, social and economic structures of that/those country(ies)
• the structures, registers and varieties of the target language(s) and of the methods required to analyse them.

Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• select synthesis and focus information from a range of sources in both English and your target language(s)
• define, present and exemplify concepts in the Linguistics, languages and related studies area
• identify concepts and data relevant to the task in hand

Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• plan and organise your learning through self-management
• set and monitor goals , reflecting on your own learning and learning from feedback
• exercise independence and initiative, particularly during the Year Abroad
• communicate effectively and confidently in English and in at least one foreign language, both orally and in writing

In this core module you will undertake four pieces of work which combine an in-depth study of a particular topic related to your programme of studies, written in English, with critical reflection on your experience abroad and the presentation of those reflections in the target language through a recorded piece.

• Research and independent study.
• Guided reflection on the year abroad experience.
• Preparation for the portfolio tasks through a taught session as well as blackboard resources.
• On-going access to level 1 and 2 modules for guidance on the extended essay .
