Become a leader in the growing field of clinical exercise physiology through a combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and cutting-edge research.

On our MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology, you'll have the opportunity to specialise in the integration of exercise science with clinical practice. With your expertise, you'll contribute to the prevention, treatment, and management of lifestyle-related diseases.

This master's course is designed to enhance your scientific knowledge and practical skills in promoting exercise for patients throughout their lives. You'll help children, young people, and older adults with conditions such as:

  • hypertension
  • diabetes
  • pulmonary, renal, and cardiac diseases
  • cancer
  • metabolic syndrome

You'll become skilled at physiological assessment, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), and behaviour change strategies. You'll also develop your practical skills through designing and delivering safe and effective exercise interventions. With your experience, you'll improve individuals’ quality of life.

On this course, you'll gain the knowledge to work alongside clinicians in managing the growing prevalence of many common diseases. You'll learn from leading academics and researchers at the University of Southampton, whose impactful research addresses global health challenges and influences health and social care policy both in the UK and internationally.

Your modules will be informed by this interdisciplinary research, including our work:

  • with the European Space Agency on muscular degeneration
  • assessing movement quality screening for illness and injury prevention
  • using technology to improve movement and posture
  • promoting healthy lifestyle behaviours in children and adolescents

The university also leads NHS prehabilitation services in cancer care and was ranked the top UK institution for Health Sciences research quality in the latest Research Excellence Framework.

Career pathways

As a graduate of our MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology, you'll be equipped to work as clinical exercise physiologists in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and private practice.

You'll be well-positioned for roles in research, health promotion, and education. With your skills and expertise, you'll collaborate with healthcare professionals to deliver exercise-based interventions for patients with chronic conditions.

On completion of the course, you'll be eligible to apply for registration with the Academy of Healthcare Sciences (AHCS).
