About the project
This 4-year integrated programme (iPhD) focuses around 5 research themes where AI can improve environmental sustainability:
- sustainable operations and circular economy
- AI for transportation and logistics
- AI for sustainable energy and buildings
- AI for the natural environment
- sustainable AI
AI for Sustainable Operations and Circular Economy focuses on using AI to optimise manufacturing processes, operations, and supply chains for sustainability, including reducing waste and energy use, improving resource efficiency, waste management and recycling, and developing more sustainable products, packaging, and service delivery models within a circular economy framework.
AI for Transportation and Logistics focuses on using AI to optimise transportation and logistics operations for sustainability, including reducing energy and resource use, improving smart mobility services, and developing more sustainable transportation systems.
AI for Sustainable Energy and Buildings focuses on using AI to optimise and improve the management of sustainable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and hydro, including forecasting and predicting energy demand, improving efficiency and reducing costs, smart grid and energy markets, and managing energy use in smart buildings.
AI for the Natural Environment focuses on using AI to protect and conserve biodiversity, including monitoring and predicting changes in ecosystems, identifying and mitigating threats to endangered species, and developing sustainable agricultural, fisheries and land management practices.
Sustainable AI focuses on reducing the power consumption that is associated with the use of AI itself. It investigates both creating more efficient machine learning algorithms to be used, as well as introducing a fundamentally different approach at the hardware level.
You will be part of a dynamic and diverse cohort within the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI for Sustainability (SustAI), benefiting from expert mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In addition to joining the SustAI Centre for Doctoral Training, this studentship offers unique career development opportunities in collaboration with our industrial partner G-Research:
- bi-annual career mentorship meetings with a G-Research quantitative researcher
- a place on the Spring into Quant Finance program during the second year
- invitations to presentations and seminars
- one annual networking dinner
- opportunity to become a brand ambassador for the programme
The SustAI CDT is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse research environment and welcome applications from individuals with diverse academic and professional backgrounds. We encourage applications from underrepresented groups in AI and sustainability, including women, ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
