The project seeks to increase the ammonia tolerance of PEM fuel cell anode catalysts so that activity is sustained at ammonia levels in excess of 0.1 ppm. This will explore the use of Pd rather than Pt as a hydrogen oxidation catalyst working on a hypothesis that modified Pd nanoparticles will be able to remediate trace amounts of ammonia. This will mean ammonia could be used as a feed gas for hydrogen fuel cells more easily and that these cells will be used to help provide power in ships.
