About
Dr Firman Simanjuntak (MInstP, SMIEEE, FHEA) is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton. He was granted the prestigious Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship to support his work focuses on developing radiation-hardened memristors for artificial intelligence accelerators in space. He is a senior member of the IEEE and the Fellow of Higher Education Academy. He is an expert in the experimental aspect of nanofabrication, materials characterization and device physics. He pioneered the neutral ions irradiations technique to achieve world-record low current 42 nm ZnO-based memristor film technology (in 2018) and to control the neuromorphic behavior of memristive artificial synapses (in 2020).

Research interests
- Dr Firman is exploiting the emerging memristive system for ultra-high dense data storage, AI-hardware accelerator, and sensor applications, where these multifunctional capabilities can exist in single architectonic enabling reconfigurable and adaptive electronic system. He is interested in integrating memristive devices with various electronics and photonics (RF, LED, waveguide, etc.) to open a new way of controlling the electrical/material properties of the integrated devices/circuits.
Current research
The high volume of endless data streams from the satellites to the ground stations and the continuous demand for a faster data computation will soon overrun the capacity of the cloud servers. We envision off-earth cloud servers by enabling artificial intelligence hardware accelerators that can sustain extreme cosmic radiations in the space environment. We are co-integrating the computation and sensory functions of nanodevices to render self-reconfigured and self-repair electronics. We strive to reduce space deployment and maintenance costs, carbon and silicon footprints, and human risk in space and nuclear environments.
