Biography
Dr. Luis Fernando Arenas is a Lecturer in Energy Engineering at the University of Southampton, UK. He holds a BSc degree in Chemistry (UAdeC, 2010), a MSc degree in Chemical Technology (UAdeC, 2013), and a PhD in Electrochemical Engineering (University of Southampton, 2017). Dr. Arenas worked as a Research Fellow on PEM fuel cells and electrochemical hydrogen pumps at University of Southampton from 2017 to 2019. Later, he contracted for the development of electrodialysis flow batteries at INEEL, Mexico, and consulted for the chlor-alkali industry between 2019 and 2020. More recently, he received a Humboldt Research Fellowship to develop organic and metal-air flow batteries at Clausthal University of Technology, Germany, from 2021 to 2023. Afterwards, he was Research Manager at the ELCAT group of University of Antwerp, Belgium, from 2023 to 2025. Dr. Arenas is a member of ISE, ECS, SNI, SCI, and RSC, and serves as an early career representative at the Electrochemical Technology Group of the Society of Chemical Industry (UK). He was awarded the Schwäbisch Gmünd Prize in 2019 and an ISE Travel Award in 2022.
