Current research
My research focuses on Global Englishes/English as a lingua franca, intercultural/transcultural communication, English medium education, Intercultural education, intercultural citizenship, and ELT, and I have published and presented internationally in all these areas with over 50 books, articles and chapters. I also supervise doctoral students in these topics. I am the co-editor of the book series ‘Developments in English as a Lingua Franca’ (De Gruyter Mouton) and 'Elements in Intercultural Communication' (Cambridge University Press).

Biography
I joined the staff in Modern Languages and Linguistics in 2009 and am currently the Director of the Centre for Global Englishes and an Associate Professor in Modern Languages and Linguistics. Prior to becoming a lecturer at Southampton I undertook a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton. Before this, I taught at Silpakorn University in Thailand for 5 years. I worked as an English language teacher for over 10 years in both the UK and Thailand at all levels, but specialising in English for Academic Purposes.
