Greg aquired his PhD on the subject of helicopter entrained dust clouds in 2013. He then took a position at the Optoelectronics Research Centre using his knowledge of multiphase flow modelling to understand the draw dynamics of hollow core optical fibre. Since then he has been involved with multiple projects and helped pioneer new hollow core fibre designs that can match the performance of conventional solid fibres.

Current research
Greg works on several aspects of Hollow Core optical Fibre (HCF). One of Greg's primary interests is to understand and model the draw dynamics of HCF, which are far more complex than conventional solid fibres. HCF guide light in a hollow core that is surrounded by a precise geometric lattice of glass. Modelling the draw dynamics of HCF is a challenging task, during the draw these fibers undergo geometric changes due to pressure, surface tension and viscous stress. The balance between these changes during the process so we use models developed by Greg to predict the correct draw parameters to achieve the structures we need. These models have enabled the HCF research group to be world leading, holding records for lowest loss at several key wavelength bands.
Greg's researhc interests also include using other modelling tols to assess the optical performance of different HCF designs, this has led to new understanding of propogation physics for HCF and some new fibre types.
