Biography
Mark Cornwall is the leading UK historian of the late Habsburg Empire, and a key authority on the history of East Central Europe in the 19th and 20th century. Over the past 30 years he has particularly specialized in modern Czech history, and in 2022 was awarded the Palacky Medal of Merit in the Historical Sciences by the Czech Aacademy of Sciences - the highest Czech award for a historian. His other major interest is the global history of treason (legal and conceptual history). He is completing a book for Oxford University Press on the history of treason/traitors in the late Habsburg Empire (1848-1918), using case studies from Czech, Hungarian, Austrian and Croatian archives.
