Current research

Professor Al-Shamkhani’s team is investigating receptors and signalling pathways that regulate T cell responses with a focus on developing strategies that promote anti-tumour immunity. Key areas of interest in his laboratory concern the immunobiology of costimulatory receptors as well as the development of antibody therapies that target these receptors. His group is also investigating potential signalling pathways that are important in effector and memory CD8 T cell differentiation. In addition to fundamental studies on T cell activation, there are ongoing studies on the characterisation of immune responses in human solid cancers. These studies aim to define the major factors that drive immune evasion as well as resistance to immunotherapy.
