Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Summarise the most important parameters that describe soil properties
• Report findings in a range of appropriate formats
• Outline relationships between the key parameters that characterise soils
• Outline how the key parameters can be determined using both field and laboratory measurements
• Design an appropriate strategy to determine the parameters needed to safely undertake a simple offshore development
• Use appropriate frameworks and terminology to describe soils and communicate effectively with civil engineers

In the context of any development there is a need for good communication between people from a range of different backgrounds. One of those key communication pathways is between geoscientists and civil engineers. This module aims to give geoscientists a vocabulary of concepts to understand the requirements of civil engineers, to place those requirements within a geological context, and be able to communicate effectively the implications of the geology for safe and sustainable execution of a civil engineering project.
