Aims and Objectives
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- application of artificial intelligence to investigations in physics
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- program and use computers to assist in the solution of physical problems
- apply machine learning techniques and artificial intelligence to a wide variety of physical problems
- interpret data using statistical techniques and make decisions taking into account experimental errors
Syllabus
Use of machine learning algorithms in the detection of interesting events in particle colliders such as the LHC or use of machine learning in exploring vast data sets obtained from astronomical observations.
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
Assessment will principally take the form of mini project write ups to be marked by the module lead of each part, with feedback to students on initial versions. Depending on the subject, the projects may involve writing and using code to discuss a physical problem of relevance.
