FMED revalidation: Applied Knowledge 1

Module overview

The Applied Knowledge 1 (AK1) module is a highly contextualised and integrated course in which the application of knowledge and understanding, clinical concepts and professional practice applicable to medicine are learned through clinical topic weeks. This module focuses on the “application of knowledge and understanding applicable to medicine”. However, it is not a stand-alone module and should be recognised by teachers and students alike as part of the whole course which is achieved by this module alongside the other “Applied Knowledge”, “Health Improvement”, “Personal and Professional Development “ and “Clinical Practice” and “Research as Applied to Medicine” modules. Assessments will focus on assessing an integrated understanding of the principles studied in all of these modules. Teaching is through lecture-based material, small group tutorials, and practical sessions. Further details will be provided on Blackboard.

Assessment

Assessment strategy

Synoptic Exam: Description: Synoptic examination comprising two examination elements; an MCQ and a Practical paper (compensation between these components is allowed if the qualifying mark is achieved in each component). Feedback: General feedback document emailed to all students. Practical paper feedback is provided soon after the assessment. One-to-one feedback meetings are available for failed students before the supplementary exams. Supplementary activity: Synoptic examination comprising MCQ and Practical papers (compensation between these components is allowed if the qualifying mark is achieved in each component). Assessment Strategy: At the end of Year 1, there is a synoptic examination comprising an MCQ paper and a Practical paper, both covering material from AK1-AK4 modules. There is compensation between these components, however, a qualifying mark needs to be achieved in each of the components. Students who do not qualify in each component or do not achieve the synoptic assessment aggregate pass mark will have a supplementary attempt which will consist of all components (MCQ and Practical papers). Students who fail the supplementary examination will be offered a repeat year.
