Humanities and Professional Practice

Module overview

This module offers you the opportunity to engage in one or two subject-related placements, totalling a minimum of 40 hours. It will enable you to explore how the skills and knowledge gained through your Humanities degree can be applied in the workplace, while also allowing you to enhance relevant work-based skills in a reflective manner. Through practical work, the module provides an opportunity to gain insight into a business or work environment, as well as hands-on experience with the technologies and applications commonly used in organisations. Placements offer invaluable opportunities for students to gain practical experience, build professional networks, and enhance their skill sets. While pursuing a degree in the humanities provides a deep understanding of human culture, society, and history, placements enable students to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world application.

Teaching and learning methods

Workshops: During the first semester, you will take part in a series of employability workshops, focusing on key topics like CV writing, application strategies, sourcing placements, and interview preparation. You will be responsible for finding and securing your own placement, with guidance and support from our Placements Manager and Humanities Career Consultants throughout the process. One-to-one consultations: you will be able to have a consultation with the Placements Manager or Career Consultant to discuss how you secure and make the most of your placement. Independent work experience and study: with the assistance of the Placement Manager and Humanities Career Consultants, you will be required to organise your own placements, including preparing appropriate CVs and cover letters, and to successfully navigate interviews and employment tests. You will work for at least 40 hours in an agreed professional setting and will reflect on that experience within the context of the module's assessment. It is your responsibility to keep the Module Lead and Placements Manager informed of progress in the workplace and of problems that have arisen.
