Clinical Biomechanics

Module overview

This module is designed to provide students from a range of multidisciplinary backgrounds, such as Podiatrists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Prosthetists, Nurses, and Engineers with the opportunity to advance your knowledge and skill in the biomechanics of human movement and to explore contemporary issues related to assessment and therapeutic management. This will involve exploring key issues of human movement analysis in a range of settings, such as the adult services within the NHS, other healthcare organisations within and outside of the UK, charity settings, sport, and the military. The module sits within the MSc Professional Practice in Health programme and is closely linked to complementary modules such as ‘Contemporary issues in Limb Loss’ (10ECTS), ‘Amputation and rehabilitation and prosthetic use’ (20ECTS) and ‘Long-term conditions of the lower limb’ (10ECTS), but can be undertaken as a standalone module. The module is likely to attract professionals who are currently working in the field of rehabilitation of human movement, or those who would like to move into a career in this area. The module will provide a flexible route for working professionals and will be taught in a one-week block.

Teaching and learning methods

The module embraces a reflective and deep learning approach where you will be encouraged to engage in a wide range of activities that lead to meaningful discussion, debate, and application to contemporary issues in human movement assessment and rehabilitation or optimisation. The module is constructed in a way that enables you to learn from your peers and gain a wider variety of rich multidisciplinary perspectives and views. The peer directed learning approach works well to support the multidisciplinary and potentially international nature of students undertaking this module. Overall, a variety of teaching methods are used throughout the module. However, most sessions involve a key lecture or demonstration following by class discussion and group work.

Assessment

Assessment strategy

Assessment for this module consists of a 3500 word clinical case scenario essay. You will be expected to 1) demonstrate your understanding of contemporary issues relating to assessment and condition diagnosis (e.g., for patient populations) or how to select movements for optimisation (e.g., for sporting populations), 2) describe and critique the literature and/or theories related to the issue, 3) discuss contemporary issues related to assessment of human movement, 4) discuss the implications of the issue in terms of management planning and current clinical/health practice and 5) evaluate application of learning to your wider sphere of professional practice.
