Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Communicate confidently with university staff and fellow students.
• Participate and collaborate in group discussions.
• Prepare and deliver an effective presentation.
• Prepare for and participate in academic discussions.
• Engage in reflective practice and identify specific ways to improve your speaking skills.

This module will consolidate and extend your previous linguistic knowledge in the study and production of materials relevant to the ECS MSc programmes. It will introduce and practise key language structures, integrating them with communication strategies.

Students will develop language and communication skills to help them succeed in their programme of study, such as:

• Listening skills for improved comprehension, effective note-taking in lectures, and reporting learnt knowledge,
• Speaking skills for successful participation in seminars and discussion groups,
• Speaking skills for delivering academic presentations and engaging effectively in Q&A sessions.

Learning activities include:

• Individual, pair, and group study/research
• Preparing and delivering presentations and participating in discussions

Teaching methods include:

• Classroom sessions
• Independent learning

While part of any class session may involve direct teaching, the emphasis is on student participation. You are expected to actively engage in discussions and tasks, such as small group and pair work, as well as individual or group presentations.
