Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Assimilate information and synthesise scientific hypotheses
- Use library and other IT facilities to access scientific information
- Produce a review article of about 5,000 words on an agreed research topic
- Produce scientific hypotheses and critically evaluate evidence in support of them

- Starting with a supervisor, and leading to the independent production of a piece of writing, of publishable quality around an agreed topic
Syllabus
This module is designed for students who are taking the MRes Evolution: From the Galapagos to the 21st Century degree. After discussion with the module coordinators the student will select a topic and discuss a specific area of the topic with their project superviser. Students will be directed to appropriate materials and attend workshops and meetings.

Assessment
Assessment strategy
The principal method of teaching will be via 10 lecture/workshops, with additional individual input from the main project supervisor. Students will write a critique from a selection of topics and prepare a popular science article, in the style of The New Scientist, or similar. The students will be directed to considerable background reading. Students will also complete their review article, with the aim to it being published, although publication, or lack thereof, will not be a requirement for passing or failing the module.
