This module focuses on the sustainable artisan and the skills and practices associated with global artisanship throughout history. This module provides the background and historical contexts, knowledge and understanding that supports ‘The Future Artisan’ module. This module builds on your knowledge, experience and skills gained from semester one, as you will participate in a more indepth external collaborative project with local artisans to gather knowledge and understanding of artisanal practice and enable you to build your own collection of sustainable artisanal textiles and think about your own professional practice and enterprise together with ‘The Future Artisan’ module. You will research and debate global market issues and trends impacting the textile industries, traditions and handicrafts, heritage crafts and artisanal practices. You will explore the life and work of an artisan, what it means to practice as an artisan, the culture, ethical values, responsibilities and sustainable contexts surrounding artisanship from around the world. You will gain understanding of the different artisanal studio practices and business models of the atelier and mettier, of couture and bespoke, of ethnic communities and workshops crafting and selling luxury and ethnic handcrafted artisanal textile products. You will build on your knowledge of the social enterprises around artisan practice, business models and the retail and promotional activities. This module will explore and debate the Circular Economy, Sustainability, Social Responsibility and the connections with artisanship. You will experiment with traditional techniques, processes and materials whilst developing your own sustainable artisanal skills and practice. You will engage with market research into the conscious consumer behaviour and consumer demand in order to target and communicate with potential customers of your work. You will further develop your academic study skills, writing skills and critical thinking skills.
