- Use ethnographic approaches to the study of diverse aspects of Asian migrations
Syllabus
The core themes revolve around the following questions:
- Will China, which is becoming an ageing society, eventually become an immigrant country?
- Can more emigration help India, an emerging economy, to cope with the population explosion?
- Will environmental changes in Asia trigger a new refugee crisis on a global scale?
- While becoming increasingly mobile and globally connected, can Asians bring revolutionary changes to the humankind?
Learning and Teaching
Teaching and learning methods
Delivery of the module content will take place through:
- lectures providing the core scholarly concepts – particularly those from anthropology and related disciplines – to the understanding of a wide range of topics related to migration, globalization and the Asian societies
- a series of case studies for understanding human mobility in and beyond Asia;
- in-class discussion about the broader significance of studying human mobility in the rapidly changing and increasingly interconnected world.
