About the Research boat
Our research boat is the University's purpose-built teaching and research catamaran. It's based in Empress Dock at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, and features large wet and dry laboratories and an A-frame for deploying equipment.
The boat offers a unique capability for teaching and research operations along the south coast, as well as a platform for marine enterprise and industry. Students on many of our ocean and earth science, and archaeology courses spend time on board, conducting fieldwork and collecting data.
The boat, the RV Callista, is also used in the Discover Oceanography programme which offers groups of all ages the opportunity to experience a hands-on introduction to marine science.
About the boat
- Capacity: 36 passengers
- Top speed: 14 knots
