Research project

Understanding the Impact of Cultural Diversity and Internationalisation at the University of Southampton

Project overview

This project will measure the experience of Chinese staff and students at the University of Southampton in both qualitative and quantitative ways. We will do this through a survey that evaluates notions of “community”, “equality”, “diversity” and “inclusion” (amongst others), what they mean and how they are “practiced” – namely how Chinese students and staff understand these ideas and what they mean to them. The survey will reflect for instance on the ways our students use WeChat and Weibo to ask questions about life in the UK and how what happens in China influence perceptions and attitudes about social attitudes (for instance, but not exclusively, around the pandemic, “pub culture”, studying at university, etc).
