Policy Mapping in SUDIC

The Sudden and Unexpected Deaths in Children (SUDIC) project, funded by the Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS) Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) 2023/24, aimed to address gaps in support for families experiencing the sudden and unexpected death of a child. The project successfully mapped the policy and commissioning landscape, identified key stakeholders, and outlined existing support structures and legislative frameworks. Key outcomes include the development of a comprehensive policy map for SUDIC in England, the establishment of a community of practice involving key stakeholders from healthcare, government, and charitable sectors, and the identification of gaps in statutory guidance with recommendations for reforms. The project engaged with policymakers and professionals to advocate for improved and consistent support for bereaved families. The project also faced challenges, such as identifying the right contacts within Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) and disruptions caused by the general election. These were addressed through proactive stakeholder engagement, efficient time management, clear communication strategies, and leveraging existing networks. Moving forward, the project has laid a strong foundation for future research and policy advocacy, with plans to continue engaging stakeholders and commencing an NIHR-funded programme in December 2024.
