Project overview

The Somerset Cancer Registry (SCR) is a national administrative reporting module for cancer activity, which has been widely adopted across the NHS. A version was purchased and adapted by University Hospital Southampton in 2014.

The original SCR module was conceived and implemented to meet NHS administrative needs, with suboptimal interface design for clinical use.

In order to upcycle the rich but poorly presented clinical data within SCR, we have developed the Southampton Somerset Cancer Registry Enhanced (SCR+) module since 2019.

SCR+ incorporates data visualisation features which were developed within the Southampton Breast Cancer Data System.

SCR+ identifies every cancer patient who has been treated in Southampton since 2014 by tumour classification and by year of presentation.

Each patient record is linked directly to the relevant UHS Lifelines EPR interface, and in the case of breast cancers, also to the relevant SBCDS record.

This methodology provides immediacy of dynamic access to all clinical records for each and every cancer patient, and the system has already been adopted as the core information source in every cancer multidisciplinary team meeting across the Hospital.

Specifically from the perspective of the Faculty of Medicine and of the School of Cancer Sciences, this system transforms the ease of access and visualisation of all cancer patient cohorts for clinical research purposes. It also makes possible research projects which could not previously easily be contemplated.

The system is under continuing evolution to enhance its functionality and data analytical capabilities.
