More than 90% of global trade is carried by maritime traffic and the volume of goods is predicted to triple by 2050 whilst decarbonisation objectives aim for net zero in the same time frame. Understanding and optimising this large complex network is challenging, due to the size and the number of follow-on effects that cascade from an initial decision.

I am working to build large scale computational models of global shipping that simplify the network without loss of information in order to inform decision making and policy. This work is inherently interdisciplinary, covering maritime engineering, computer science and complexity science.
