Current research

Ashia’s current research focuses on exploring how catalysts can be used to prevent methane being released into the atmosphere from liquified natural gas (LNG) fuelled marine vessels. Building upon previous research, the PhD aims to improve the volume of methane that can be selectively captured and stored in porous, heterogenous catalysts. Further, the project will investigate how efficiently these materials work under conditions reflecting those found in the exhausts of LNG powered ships.

An increasing number of ships are using LNG as an alternative fuel as it gives benefits such as reduced local air pollutants and carbon dioxide emissions. However, this currently releases small amounts of unburnt methane from the exhaust into the atmosphere, known as ‘methane slip,’ counteracting the above-mentioned advantages of LNG.

Creating catalysts which can be integrated into the engine and exhaust design and capture this methane before it is released, could have a significant impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions of LNG vessels.
