About

Shelley Boulianne is a professor based in Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton (UK).

She studies media use, public opinion, and civic and political engagement, using meta-analysis techniques, surveys, experiments, and more recently, computational methods. Her research examines the global dynamics of digital media use for citizens’ engagement in civic and political life, including talking about politics, volunteering, marching, boycotting and signing petitions. She studies how digital media, particularly social media, can be a tool for citizens to connect, become informed, and organize collectively; she also examines how digital media offer a platform for expressive forms of participation. Regarding public opinion research, her research focuses on the environment/climate change and misinformation/platform regulation.

Dr. Boulianne is the North American Editor at Information, Communication & Society (ICS) and an Associate Editor at Social Science Computer Review (SSCR). She is the program chair/then elected chair for the American Political Science Association’s Information, Technology, and Politics section. She is on the editorial board for New Media & Society, Communication Research, and Journal of Information Technology and Politics.
