Matthew Coats is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Fashion Design at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. His academic practice is shaped by a decade of industry experience, including his time as a designer at Chanel in Paris under Karl Lagerfeld.
His professional background spans luxury fashion houses, start-up brands, and modelling agencies, alongside teaching roles at the University of Brighton, London College of Fashion, and Birmingham City University. This diverse trajectory informs his critical and practice-based approach to fashion education.
Matthew’s current research and teaching interests include material intelligence, narrative fashion, surface design, and circular design systems. He is currently External Examiner for BA Fashion Design Technology: Menswear at London College of Fashion.
