About
Ali Elham is Professor of Design Optimisation in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He received his Ph.D. in 2013 from Delft University of Technology, where his research focused on the multidisciplinary design optimisation of lifting surfaces. Before joining the University of Southampton in January 2022, Ali was Professor of Aircraft Conceptual Design and Director of the Institute of Aircraft Design and Lightweight Structures at TU Braunschweig, Germany. His research centres on developing and applying multidisciplinary design optimisation techniques to enable the design of next-generation transport aircraft towards zero emissions. His current work includes designing novel aircraft configurations, as well as electric, hybrid-electric, and hydrogen-powered aircraft. He also investigates coupled-adjoint aerostructural optimisation, multiphysics topology optimisation, and the development of advanced computational methods for aerodynamic and structural analysis to support aerospace vehicle design. Ali is a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) Structures and Materials Specialist Committee and serves as Vice-President for Academic Affairs of the Society of Allied Weight Engineers (SAWE).
You can update this in Pure (opens in a new tab). Select ‘Edit profile’. Under the heading and then ‘Curriculum and research description’, select ‘Add profile information’. In the dropdown menu, select - ‘About’.
Write about yourself in the third person. Aim for 100 to 150 words covering the main points about who you are and what you currently do. Clear, simple language is best. You can include specialist or technical terms.
You’ll be able to add details about your research, publications, career and academic history to other sections of your staff profile.
