Dr Patrick Beullens is an Associate Professor in Operational Research and Management Science within Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton. His current research interests in popular science topics include the computational theory of mind and evolutionary psychology, and links to decsion making under risk, with application in various sectors including retail supply chains and international shipping.

Current research
Dr Beullens is interested in applied and issue-oriented research and consultancy in the areas of Operational Research and Management Science, mainly in the fields of:
Ocean freight and shipping - Bulk and tanker industries, Environmental performance, Charter contracts, Speed and scheduling decisions under risk, Hedging.
Retail supply chains - Perishable products, food waste management, integration from production to marketing, internet sales & delivery
Logistics and reverse logistics (closed loop supply chains, recycling, greening the supply chain)
Inventory control (supply chain optimisation, net present value analysis)
Mathematical techniques that Dr Beullens has applied to his research include mathematical programming (linear, integer, goal, stochastic), non-linear optimisation (variational inequalities), stochastic processes (compound Poisson and Bernouilli, queuing theory, Markov chains), exact and heuristic algorithms for combinatorial optimisation (algorithm design, automated parameter tuning), artificial intelligence (fuzzy logic, neural networks, information theory and decision trees), game theory (competitive and cooperative), and Laplace transforms (renewal theory, net present value).
