Geoff is a Principal Research Fellow and specialist in Evidence Synthesis working in Southampton Health Technology Assessments Centre (SHTAC) based within the School of Healthcare Enterprise and Innovation. Geoff recently held a 3-year tenure (2002-2005) as the school's Deputy Head of School (Research). He initiated and organises the School's Research and Innovation Community of Practice.
In SHTAC, Geoff coordinates teams of systematic reviewers and health economists producing critical Evidence Review Reports for the National Institute for Health and Care Excelence (NICE) Technology Appraisals Programme. These appraisals cover a wide range of conditions including (among others) cancers; liver, heart, eye and skin disorders; type 2 diabetes; asthma; bloodstream infections; sexually transmitted infections; obesity; and rare metabolic disorders.
Geoff has an interest in improving the methods of evidence synthesis, particularly the critical apprasal of evidence and research, and is actively involved in developing and updating guidelines and standards for the conduct of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, systematic maps and rapid reviews. He has a background in environmental research and risk assessment and contributes to several activities of the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence, a not-for-profit organisation promoting best practice in environmental evidence reviews.
Geoff is currently a co-editor of the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence Guidelines and Standards on Evidence Synthesis in Environmental Management, a member of the editorial boards of Environmental Evidence journal and Evdence-Based Toxicology journal, and (from 2026) an invited member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Evidence-Based Toxicology Collaborative.
