Current research
Dr. Lei Li, a Lecturer in the University of Southampton, has led the establishment of the Digital Heart Modelling Lab at Southampton, a pioneering initiative focused on advancing the frontiers of cardiac digital twins – virtual heart models. Leveraging diverse patient datasets encompassing imaging, ECG, and electronic medical records, the lab meticulously models heart anatomy and simulates its function. By integrating machine learning, these models unravel critical mechanistic relationships, providing deep insights into patients' cardiac trajectories. With a core emphasis on methodology development, the lab employs cutting-edge techniques to create anatomical twins, such as constructing computationally efficient 4D personalized cardiac anatomical models from cine MRI data, as well as functional twinning, where it endeavors to develop computationally efficient surrogates for simulation models of complex cardiac activity. The lab will also actively engages in clinical evaluation in hospital, with a particular focus on personalized medicine applications for atrial fibrillation and myocardial infarction. Collaborating with experts from the University of Oxford, Fudan University, Zhongshan Hospital, etc, This multidisciplinary cooperation promises groundbreaking advancements at the intersection of AI and cardiac sciences. It not only redefines our understanding of the human heart but also holds the potential to advance personalized medicine.
