This module covers the contributions of chemical engineering to the sustainable production of energy and the use of sustainable energy management to improve chemical production and processing.

- Critically assess the importance of renewable energy resources in sustainable chemical engineering design.
- Conduct audits of energy audit and design methods of energy management to create more sustainable processes

- Evaluate the use of process control, catalysis and reaction to optimise Energy generation and processing (Practice)
- Assess the impacts of health and safety, with respect to current legal requirements. (Breadth)
- Summarise the impact of chemical engineering on sustainable energy generation
- Analyse the parameters required for a complete life cycle analysis in the context of water use and energy utilisation in resources transformation and processing (Design)
- Apply and evaluate concepts and limitations of chemical engineering in energy systems (Practice);

- Select and utilise appropriate chemical engineering tools to model complex Heat and Mass transfer processes. (Design)
Knowledge and Understanding
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Extend and apply knowledge of design practices to describe the primary operating parameters in current Energy concepts and sustainability, demand and utilisation storage systems and distribution;
Syllabus
- A background to the Earth's natural cycles and ecosystem services, potential environmental and ethical/social issues and the interactions with resource use and waste production.
- Renewable and non-renewable materials and energy generation.
- The concept of sustainable development and how this can be integrated into an organisation's strategic plan.
- A review of the relevant standards that could be encountered in relation to these processes.
- Design concepts, including the energy and waste hierarchies as well as tools such as the circular economy and the life cycle approach to minimise resource use and waste generation in process engineering.

Practical: Completion of two practical exercises to illustrate the operation of energy application
