Module overview
Through this module you will experience embedding the fundamentals of research, analysis and reflective practices in the creation of your own critically informed garments. By examining garments as cultural artifacts within broader socio-historical contexts, you will be equipped with a critical lens through which to understand the significance of design choices and the narratives embedded within clothing. You will participate in lectures, design workshops and independent research aimed at applying theoretical concepts and material studies to the creation of your own original garment.

Syllabus
Through a range of current fashion and culture debates we will introduce you to context and theory to inform and inspire you to be critical of the work of others as well as your own work. Informed by a such a critical context you will be encouraged to reflect on the practice of making in the form of writing and challenged to contextualise your own work through the make of your own unique garment.
We will also highlight the importance of academic integrity and intellectual property i.e. not misrepresenting the work of others as your own, and raise your ethical awareness of embedding certain narratives in your Fashion Design.
The project and content of this module is themed to provide a focused context to the development of your conceptual awareness of fashion design and embed it through practical skills.
Group and one-to-one tutorials are held with specialist staff that will help you to review your progress and development. Group discussion will provide opportunities for peer group learning and self-evaluation.
