Research project

Living and Dying at Great Chesterford

Project overview

Great Chesterford is the site of an early Saxon period cemetery, with a relatively large number of juvenile inhumations and several individuals with evidence of skeletal impairment or "difference". Burial is an expression of identity and social memory and hence such practices are encoded in the burial chaine operatoire for each individual. The dead do not bury themselves and so burials inform also as to the living who surrounded the dead. This project explores the lived lives of some of the individuals buried at the site and tries to give these people their personhood.
