Dr Erica Mulowayi

Dr Erica is an adept of critical and analytical thinking, as well as collaborative, interactive and empowerment pedagogy. Her teaching style has always been to create a structured community learning environment, where students find their places among a community of learners like them. She has used her experience and expertise in Construction and Project Management to provide academic supervisions, one-on-one support, and locally contextualized learning activities. Over the years, she has demonstrated ability to interact with students with cross cultural sensitivities, and diverse learning abilities and backgrounds to empower them to take ownership of their learnings.

She has used scholarly innovative approaches such as Flipped learning approach or blended learning approach, developed industry projects-based learning activities, all through learning management systems or platforms such as Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, Collaborate Ultra, Vevox, GoaSoap, online video tools and podcasts, Turnitin etc.

Her experience and expertise have been widely evident through the development, coordination, as well as delivering of numerous modules and courses in the Construction, and Project Management, as well as in the Engineering and Research streams for both undergraduate and post-graduate students. All of which were delivered in universities and institutions such as Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Western Sydney University, LaTrobe University, RMIT University in Australia, as well as in the University of Greenwich, University of East London and Global Banking School in partnership with Bath Spa University.

Dr Erica has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) from Griffith University, and a PhD in Construction, Disaster and Project Management from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia. During her PhD, she was awarded a Fellowship certificate of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of the attainment against the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education.

Prior to joining the University of Southampton, Dr Erica worked as a Programme Level Lead in the Construction Management Department at Global Banking School (GBS). Her role consisted of creating level 4, as well as monitoring and supporting the academic development of students. She supervised and worked with module leaders and lecturers to ensure that consistency and coherence across the programme delivery standards, objectives and deadlines were met.

Dr Erica began her career in the construction industry, working on road construction projects with Logan City Council's Road Construction and Maintenance Department. She also worked for the Transport Network Reconstruction Program (TNRP), which was part of the recovery program organized by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in conjunction with Abigroup Contractors and Lendlease following the 2011 Queensland floods. Her research experiences were those of working for research projects for the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), as well as for the New South Wales Council of Social Service (NCOSS). She was involved in a research project on design thinking with the Design Innovation Research Centre (DIRC), and she worked as a research policy officer for the housing and homelessness department of NCOSS in NSW in Australia.
