Progression, Determination and Classification of Results for Postgraduate Masters ProgrammesExemption/Variation/Addition
1.Introduction
1.1

The following regulations apply to all Undergraduate and Integrated Masters taught programmes at levels 6 and 7 (see  Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) Scheme), except in so far as a variation or an exemption for particular programmes has been allowed under 1.3 and 1.4 below. These Regulations should be read in conjunction with the Regulations and Definitions Applying to Progression for all Credit-Bearing Programmes. Defined terms are capitalised in the regulations.

Exemption/Variation:

1.1 The following regulations specify the variations, exemptions and additions applying to the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Integrated Masters Programmes 2025-26 for the above named programmes. Paragraph 2 of the Regulations and Definitions Applying to Progression for all Credit-Bearing Programmes is replaced by the following definitions:

Definitions:

Learning Outcome: is a statement of what students are expected to know, understand, or be able to do at the completion of the Part. The Learning Outcomes for the Part can be found in the assessment handbook, and the exception that the following terms are redefined as:

Fail:  A Failed Part is one in which one or more Learning Outcome is not achieved at the threshold level;

Part: A Part is a collection of learning activities and assessments which allow a student to demonstrate achievement of the Learning Outcomes to determine Progression. For full time undergraduate students a Part normally corresponds to two semesters of study. A Part will predominantly be at one academic level with successive Parts at successively higher levels. The total credit rating of a Part will be as specified in the CAT Scheme.

Pass: A Pass may be achieved in the Part if the threshold level of achievement is attained for all the Learning Outcomes of that Part. A Pass results in the award of the full 60 ECTS (120 CATS) of credit for the Part.

Progression: A student who Passes a Part of a programme Progresses to the next Part, or in the case of the final Part of their programme, progresses to Classification of their degree.

Referral: the re-taking of all or part of the assessment or an alternative assessment for a Failed Learning Outcome in order to achieve a Pass. Referral assessments are usually taken in August/September at the end of the academic year in which the Learning Outcome was Failed, but may be taken at other times, including earlier, as specified by the School.

Repeat: Repeat is the re-taking of assessments during the academic year following the first attempt, or following an unsuccessful Referral. Normally students may choose whether to Repeat Internally or Externally, following academic counselling from the School in which they are registered. However, some learning Outcomes require specific practical or placement activities that necessitate attendance; students needing to Repeat such Learning Outcomes will be required to undertake a full Internal Repeat. Where this applies it will be stated in the assessment handbook.

Internal Repeat: A student choosing an Internal Repeat will be required to Repeat all learning activities and assessments, including those associated with Learning Outcomes passed at the first attempt. The student is entitled to attend all taught sessions. The full tuition fee is charged for an Internal Repeat. A student choosing an Internal Repeat is not permitted to transfer to an External Repeat part way through the year.

External Repeat: A student choosing an External Repeat will be permitted to Repeat only those Learning Outcomes which were Failed at the first attempt and not passed at Referral. The student is not required to pay tuition fees and hence is not entitled to access taught sessions or academic or pastoral support services. They will have an enrolment status of 'Repeat non attending' which allows access to the Library and to IT services only, A student Repeating Externally may be required to pay fees for examinations and other assessments. Programme Regulations will specify the mode of assessment which will be used. A student choosing an External Repeat is not permitted to transfer to an Internal Repeat part way through the year.
